After them, Life

In 2022, France experienced its first mega fire in Landiras, Gironde—a devastating event that marked a turning point in the country’s environmental history. Just a few days after the fire, Thomas visited the site to witness the first signs of life emerging from the ashes.

The Gironde region, once a vast swamp, was transformed by human intervention into a forested area through the extensive planting of pines. This transformation, however, created the conditions for the mega fire—a disaster largely driven by human activity and exacerbated by the ongoing climate crisis. Recognizing the profound significance of this event, Thomas set out to capture the first wild, naturally occurring plants sprouting from the charred landscape.

His work, titled “After Them, Life,” envisions a future where, in the aftermath of humanity, nature begins to reclaim and renew itself from the ashes of the man-made world.
