Bird Nest

The weaving of a failure.

In the coastal regions of Senegal, the weaver bird engages in a fascinating ritual of selection. The male spends days constructing a complex nest, weaving together twigs and grass with remarkable skill. Once completed, the female arrives to test its strength by shaking it vigorously. If the nest holds, it becomes the foundation for their family. If it fails, the female leaves, and the nest falls to the ground.

The nests captured in these photographs are the remnants of such failures—“the weaving of a failure.” They are the delicate structures that could not withstand the love test. These nests are not just discarded debris; they are the echoes of an effort that, though it did not succeed, was no less remarkable.
